Currabubula is located 14.5 km north-east of Werris Creek and 32 kms south-west ofTamworth.
The town Currabubula was proclaimed on the 20th March 1885.
The name Currabubula was derived from the original Kamilaroi name Carrabobbila. One of the last tribal leaders King Bing stated it meant “rising water” alluding to the rising spring and permanent water hole at Currabubula which added to the assets of this scenic pass to the north.
Major Thomas Mitchell’s expedition in 1831 discovered the effortless pass from the Liverpool Plains to thePeelValley, with the word spreading the pass became the main road into the north (today the old stock route). This pass was one of the first locations for a hotel “Paddy Davis” officially licensed in 1838 as the “Freemasons Arms Hotel” was one of the first hotels to be located inland of theLiverpoolRange, no doubt putting the area of Currabubula on the map.
