National Volunteers Week

from 11/05/2015

to 17/05/2015

It's time to say THANK YOU! Volunteering Australia published a survey about volunteering and here are some interesting facts: In 2010, 6.1 million people (36%) of the Australian population aged 18 years and over participated in voluntary work, with women (38%) more likely to volunteer than men (34%).
  • The total annual hours volunteered was 713 million.
  • The median weekly number of hours volunteered was 1.1hrs.
  • The median annual number of hours volunteered was 56hrs.
  • People who volunteer are more likely to have made a donation than those who are not volunteers (85% compared to 72%).”
“ The difference I make to the community”  and “ The sense of purpose it gives me”  were the two most frequently mentioned things volunteers valued most about their volunteering experience in the National Survey of Volunteering Issues (Volunteering Australia, 2011, p9). National Volunteers Week gives Volunteers a chance to be celebrated and appreciated. The Liverpool Plains Shire Council thanks all the volunteers around the Shire by inviting them to a Volunteers Morning Tea, which is usually held on the Wednesday of Volunteers Week.  Our Volunteers Activity this year has been planned for Tuesday, 6th June with Morning Tea and a movie at the Royal Theatre.

National NAIDOC Week

from 05/07/2015

to 12/07/2015

We all stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect Celebrate. This year the theme highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea. The theme is an opportunity to pay respects to country; honour those who work tirelessly on preserving land, sea and culture and to share the stories of many sites of significance or sacred places with the nation. As the oldest continuing culture on the planet, the living culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is intrinsically linked with these sacred places. Sacred places can be geographic feature like a river or lake, a beach, bays, inlets, hills or a mountain ranges or ceremonial grounds, galleries of rock art or engravings or places used for gathering for cultural practices. Long before European arrival, these places had traditional names - names that now reflect the timeless relationship between the people and the land. Often sacred places are connected with Dreaming stories or tell of the meaning of an area. This year’s theme was also chosen specifically to highlight and celebrate the anniversary of the ‘Handback’ of Uluru, one of these sacred sites, to its traditional owners on 26 October 30 years ago. The National NAIDOC Committee encourages all Australians - young and old - to embrace the 2015 National NAIDOC theme.

Unpaid carers come from all walks of life. They provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or are frail aged. With more than 2.6 million unpaid carers in Australia, chances are you, or someone you know, may be a carer. Find out more by visiting website: http://www.carersaustralia.com.au/events/carers-week/   The Liverpool Shire Council has planned a number of activities to show our appreciation to our valuable carers.
