National Volunteers Week

from 20/05/2019

to 26/05/2019

It's time to say THANK YOU! Volunteering Australia published a survey about volunteering and here are some interesting facts: In 2010, 6.1 million people (36%) of the Australian population aged 18 years and over participated in voluntary work, with women (38%) more likely to volunteer than men (34%).
  • The total annual hours volunteered was 713 million.
  • The median weekly number of hours volunteered was 1.1hrs.
  • The median annual number of hours volunteered was 56hrs.
  • People who volunteer are more likely to have made a donation than those who are not volunteers (85% compared to 72%).”
“ The difference I make to the community”  and “ The sense of purpose it gives me”  were the two most frequently mentioned things volunteers valued most about their volunteering experience in the National Survey of Volunteering Issues (Volunteering Australia, 2011, p9). National Volunteers Week gives Volunteers a chance to be celebrated and appreciated. The Liverpool Plains Shire Council is holding a Volunteer Open Day at the Emergency Services Precinct, 124 Pryor Street, Quirindi on 24 May from 22am to 2pm. Meet our local volunteers with a free BBQ and workshops available.

This year's theme is "Life and Death". The theme of Life and Death includes stories about life’s milestones and how different cultures come to terms with death. How do we commemorate people’s lives and what do rituals and burial practices reveal about our relationship with and understanding of life and death? History Week will investigate how death has been feared, used as a form of punishment and shattered communities. It will also show how communities have rebuilt after loss, shared stories across generations and inspired remembrance and creative expression. History Week will explore these ideas and many more from 1 to 9 September 2018.
