National Volunteers Week

from 08/05/2017

to 14/05/2017

It's time to say THANK YOU! Volunteering Australia published a survey about volunteering and here are some interesting facts: In 2010, 6.1 million people (36%) of the Australian population aged 18 years and over participated in voluntary work, with women (38%) more likely to volunteer than men (34%).
  • The total annual hours volunteered was 713 million.
  • The median weekly number of hours volunteered was 1.1hrs.
  • The median annual number of hours volunteered was 56hrs.
  • People who volunteer are more likely to have made a donation than those who are not volunteers (85% compared to 72%).”
“ The difference I make to the community”  and “ The sense of purpose it gives me”  were the two most frequently mentioned things volunteers valued most about their volunteering experience in the National Survey of Volunteering Issues (Volunteering Australia, 2011, p9). National Volunteers Week gives Volunteers a chance to be celebrated and appreciated. The Liverpool Plains Shire Council thanks all the volunteers around the Shire by inviting them to a Volunteers Thank you Lunch at Hoamm Park in Werris Creek at 12noon on Tuesday, 9th May; on Thursday, 11th May there are two free seminars at the Quirindi RSL (Tony Caine Room) 9am: Seven Steps to Grant Success and 1.30pm: Social Media Marketing. Quirindi & District Historical Society History Week

from 03/09/2016

to 11/09/2016

This year's theme is "Neighbours"

The theme of neighbours is crucial to our understanding of the past’s impact on the present. It includes stories of individuals, families and communities living near one another and links between adjoining suburbs, regions and countries. As the success of the Australian television program Neighbours shows, the theme has long been a significant component of popular culture. It shaped imagination and memories, created identities and was a source of both conflict and friendship. How important were class, the economy, gender, governments, the media, race, religion and sport in the formation of ideas regarding neighbours? How have attitudes regarding a nation’s geographic neighbours determined defence, foreign, immigration, refugee and trade policies? Did new types of communication and transport from the nineteenth century onwards radically alter how neighbours and neighbourhoods were perceived? In 2016 History Week focuses on these and other related questions.

National Sustainable House Day

from 11/09/2016

If you're interested in sustainable living, don't miss this opportunity to see how Castlemountain is set up. Castle Mountain is constructed of stone and cypress pine sourced from the property. The kitchen, dining, sunken lounge [with Spin-a-fire] and games area occupy the pavilion-style main room with raked ceilings and exposed beams. The house is insulated with iszal and Solomit. Overlooking the groundfloor is the mezzanine floor supported in part by the trunks of five very large pines. There are three bedrooms, a small bathroom and a rumpus room upstairs, the master bedroom and guest bedroom are on the lower floor together with two bathrooms, a laundry and pantry. Water and power sources are autonomous (off-grid). Built on a cement slab the whole house is surrounded by verandahs. Apart from the bedrooms the lower floor is ceramic tiled unlike the mezzanine which is narrow pine boards salvaged while milling the larger timbers through the on-site mill. The flooring of the verandah is 75cm lengths of pine standing on their ends. Above the walkway on the mezzanine floor are clerestory windows aiding hot air evacuation in summer and warmth in winter. In the whole of the house the majority of the windows are louvres. Peter and Lynda open their house from 11am to 4pm. Entry is by donating a gold coin (for operation Christmas Child). Castemountain is at 665 Carinya Road, Quirindi (follow Carinya Road to the end). For more information call Peter on 0403 034 546. castlemountain1
